

Photocopy of a wordprocessed memoir (24pp), written in 2007, covering his basic training as a CW rating in the shore establishment HMS COLLINGWOOD at Fareham, Hampshire (September 1941 – January 1942) his service as a rating in the destroyer HMS PAKENHAM (January – June 1942) which, after working up at Scapa Flow, took part in the invasion of Madagascar and Operation Vigorous, the fiercely contested and unsuccessful attempt to sail a supply convoy from Alexandria to Malta, in May and June 1942 his training as an officer cadet in the shore establishment HMS GOOD HOPE in South Africa (ca August – December 1942) his uneventful appointment as a Sub Lieutenant RNVR in the Eastern Fleet destroyer HMAS NORMAN based on Kilindini (ca January – March 1943) his service as a Sub Lieutenant RNVR in the destroyer HMS QUEENBOROUGH (ca April – December 1943) which was deployed in the Mediterranean, including the Sicily and Salerno landings, and the Adriatic and, after a period of training and leave, his appointment as a Lieutenant RNVR as the Signals and Torpedo Control Officer in the destroyer HMS VIGILANT (June 1944 – July 1945), which was based on Scapa Flow till December 1944 and then served with the Eastern Fleet based on Ceylon, taking part in operations against Japanese shipping, shore bombardment duties and the sinking of the Japanese cruiser HAGURO and his appointment as ADC to the Governor of Ceylon (July – September 1945), in which he met Field Marshal Slim and Lord Mountbatten before returning to the United Kingdom.
